Founded in 1964, the Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad originally was housed in a new house along N. Sterling Blvd, which also was where the first Library in Sterling was located. The garage in the building orginially could house two of its vehilces. In the late 1960's the Rescue Squad purcahsed a heavy rescue truck, housing the vehicle on site was difficult, so the Heavy Rescue was parked inside one of the service bays in the Shell gas station at the corner of Commerce St and E. Holly Ave. At the same time newly formed fire company was located in an old dairy barn on W. Holly Ave.
It bacame clear by the end of the decade, that both companies were running out of space and was in need of a new faciliy. Both departments joined forces and constructed the existing station locaed at 104 Comerce St. The station was orginially a single floor station and was built in 1971. As the department's grew and servce demands increased, the station went under a 2 million dollar renovation and expansion in 1989 which added the second floor and expnaded the storage area.

In the 1990's Eastern Loudoun County was experiencing an explosive growth in development, resulting growth of traffic, residences, population and call volume. All this was going to impact the organizations ability to provide service so the leadership of Steling Rescue started to work with the developers to secure a piece of land to build a new station. Prior to this, a sub-staiton was built in the Sugarland Community in the mid 1980's to house some equipment that volunteers could respond to calls from home. This was merely holding us over to a new and more modern facility could be constructed. The station went in-service on December 24, 1997. Today, this station serves as our department's corporate headquarters.

Sugarland Run Substation
The Sugarland Run Substation, at 81 N. Sugarland Run Drive, was built in 1984 to house both units from Sterling Fire and Sterling Rescue. The outcry for a substation occured following a major house fire wihtin the commuity. Prior to the fire, members of Sterling Rescue who lived in the Sugarland Community would take turns parking an ambulance in their driveway to be a first responder to calls in the communities north of Rt. 7. In the early 1990's with the call volume increasing in the communites north of Rt 7 and delays with the construction of a new facility in the Cascade's community, the bay area was modified to accommodate bunkrooms, so that the station could be staffed around the clock.
Today, the building is used by the Sheriff's Office as part of their Community Policing program and houses our department's Special Events Team (Bikes and ATV), along much needed storage.
